BILLABONG + QUIKSILVER = $17 MILLION LONGBOARD TOUR!
Thursday, 1 April 2010

Gold Coast, Australia: In an unprecedented display of co-operation and foresight, leading surf companies Billabong and Quiksilver have banded together with Virgin and the ASP to create a six-event world longboard tour with an overall prize purse of $17,000,000.

"This is the most exciting development in professional surfing in decades," said Gordon Green, spokesperson for the surf companies. "In participating numbers, longboarding is an enormous sport worldwide encompassing a broad demographic both male and female. Billabong and Quiksilver have generously supported longboarding and 'alternative' surfing for decades now, fully recognising that 17-year-olds on tiny shortboards are just a small segment of a vast overall surf market. The new QuikBong Tour is a perfect opportunity for us to keep it real!"

Negotiations are underway with free-to-air and pay TV networks in major surfing nations, with TBS Japan, ATB Brazil, Nine Australia and Fuel TV already signed till 2013. The overall aim is to hold all six events in quality surf - meaning extended waiting periods at renowned breaks. Events are slotted for California, Kauai, Fiji, Western Australia, Morocco and Indonesia.

On his recent diplomatic mission to Australia, Indonesian President Susilio Bambang Yudhoyono was asked about the longboard tour at his news conference in Canberra - and it seems he'd definitely been briefed. "I have spoken to the Sumatran Minister for the Mentawaii, and we are giving a government guarantee that the surf at Lances Right (HTs) will be cleared of all surfers except the longboarders for a two-week period in early July to kick the tour off in fine style. Kowabunga!" said President Yudhoyono. Kowabunga indeed Bambang!

Not to be outdone, US President Barack Obama stated from the Oval Office, "When I was a youngster in Hawaii I loved to body surf, but I'd never tried longboarding until a recent vacation on Oahu. I'd always wondered if I could walk the walk. Well, I just have to say, 'No I can't!'

"But this has only re-enforced the tremendous admiration I have for longboarders, and rest assured, we will be deploying the US Marines as water patrol at Malibu and Hanalei Bay to ensure the success of the American legs of the tour!"
